Marco Glaviano, born in Palermo, Sicily, in 1942, is a renowned Italian photographer celebrated for his significant contributions to fashion photography and his pioneering work in digital imaging. He studied architecture at the University of Palermo, where he developed a passion for photography. During this period, he also engaged in theater as a set designer and played in a jazz band, reflecting his diverse artistic interests.
In 1967, Glaviano decided to pursue photography professionally, moving first to Rome and then to Milan, where he established a studio and worked for eight years. His photographs began appearing in major European fashion magazines, notably Italian Vogue, which eventually brought him to New York City in 1975. There, he secured exclusive contracts with American Vogue and later Harper’s Bazaar, solidifying his status in the fashion industry.
Throughout his illustrious career, Glaviano has photographed over 500 covers and editorials for leading international publications. He played a pivotal role in the development of the supermodel phenomenon in the 1980s, collaborating with Elite Model Management and photographing iconic models such as Cindy Crawford, Paulina Porizkova, and Eva Herzigova for their famous swimsuit calendars.
A trailblazer in digital photography, Glaviano published the first-ever digital fashion photograph in American Vogue in 1982. He has served as a consultant for companies like Kodak, Fuji, Hasselblad, Phase One, Sinar, and Scitex, contributing to the advancement of digital photography. In 1995, he designed and founded Pier 59 Studios in New York, recognized as one of the most important photo studios in the world.
Beyond fashion, Glaviano has photographed major advertising campaigns for clients such as L’Oréal, Revlon, Calvin Klein, Valentino, Giorgio Armani, and Roberto Cavalli. His interests in film and video have led him to direct a number of TV commercials and short films related to music, fashion, and beauty in both America and Europe.
